Description of Event
If we all get our wish, our regional economy will grow rapidly in the coming years; whether we like it or not, the challenge of managing the waste we produce will grow, too. On March 27th, Cape Fear Economic Development Council convened a thought provoking discussion about how continued careful management of solid waste could lead to regional job creation AND a reduction of our environmental footprint.

John Hubbard of New Hanover County will talk about the current status of waste and recycling policy in New Hanover County, as well as the economic, social and environmental challenges and opportunities the region will face moving into the future. John oversees one of North Carolina’s most advanced integrated solid waste systems, including waste-to-energy, recycling, and lined landfilling.

Les Evans of WasteZero, Inc. will talk about the regional and national solid waste management picture, including a discussion of best practices. Mr. Evans has a background in environmental engineering, and has insight and experience into waste management programs implemented in small and large cities around the coutry. He has done specific research on our region and can give us some insight into how we compare to other coastal cities of similar size.
